Nice article :slight_smile: One dilemma that also came to mind is privacy versus public safety. Governments and law enforcement increasingly rely on surveillance technologies, facial recognition, and access to digital communications to prevent crime and terrorism. At the same time, these tools can affect individual privacy and civil liberties.

Where should the line be drawn? How much privacy should people be willing to give up in exchange for greater security? I think this is another legal dilemma that will only become more important in the coming years.

Indeed and I found the section on AI in Justice particularly interesting because it raises another question that may become relevant in the future.

Right now, if an AI system makes a harmful decision, responsibility ultimately falls on humans—the developers, the organization deploying it, or the people overseeing its use. But what happens if AI systems become increasingly autonomous and capable of making complex decisions with little or no human intervention?

Could we ever reach a point where society considers AI to bear some form of legal or even moral responsibility? Or is responsibility something that can only belong to humans because it requires consciousness, intent, and an understanding of right and wrong?

It will be interesting to see whether the law continues to treat AI solely as a tool or whether entirely new legal concepts emerge as the technology develops.

I’d be interested to hear what the community thinks. Is moral or legal responsibility inseparable from being human, or could that assumption eventually be challenged?

Good reflection ! I think accountability should remain with humans. AI can assist or even act autonomously, but responsibility belongs to those who design, deploy, and govern these systems.

By the way, did you know that there was a widely reported legal case (Mata v. Avianca Inc.) involving lawyers who used an AI chatbot to help prepare a legal filing?

The lawyers submitted a brief containing fake legal citations generated by AI. The court sanctioned the attorneys because they failed to verify the information before submitting it.

The lesson from the case:

  • AI can assist lawyers, but lawyers remain responsible for accuracy.
  • Professional duties of competence and verification still apply.
